Obituary

Evangeline regas catsos, 94, of kanawha city, fell asleep in the lord on january 1, 2019, at the marmet center following a long struggle with alzheimer’s disease.

Her family wishes to thank the nurses, doctors, and aides at marmet center who do the impossible every day: by combining professionalism with compassion, warmth and unending patience.

Evangeline was preceded in death by her parents, sofia pappas and george regas, who came to america as greek immigrants in 1920, and also her husband, michael, originally from new york city.

She graduated from high school in dorothy, raleigh county, and worked as manager in her father’s grocery store on charleston’s west side.

She is survived by her son, nicholas and daughter anita joy.

Evangeline and her husband mike were among the founding members of st. John greek orthodox church, both faithfully gave their time and labor to their religious community. Evangeline was a devoted member of the ladies philoptochos society, a charitable group.

An ardent animal lover, evangeline spent a lifetime nurturing not only her family and friends, but also any stray or injured animal she came across. Her love of and dedication to her family, friends, church, and community knew no bounds. She helped many greek immigrants learn english and gain american citizenship. She was strong in her faith in god and in the inherent goodness of all people.

We will always miss her ready smile and the warmth of her presence.

Funeral service will be 11 am tuesday, january 8, 2019 at st. John greek orthodox church in kanawha city with fr. Matthew moore officiating. Burial will follow at spring hill cemetery, charleston. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to st. John greek orthodox church, 3512 maccorkle avenue, se, charleston, wv 25304.

Barlow bonsall funeral home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
