Glenna E. Underwood, of Charleston, WV, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2019 at Charleston Gardens. She was born February 22, 1920 to the late John Kelly and Nancy Harmon Peters of Cool Ridge, WV.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Everett E. Underwood, ten siblings and her son-in-law Charles A. Lynch, Jr.
Glenna graduated from Concord College with an Elementary Education major. She began her teaching career in one-room Raleigh County elementary schools at Penman, Table Rock and Griffith. She received a master’s degree from WVU and taught 1st Grade for many years at Shady Spring prior to becoming a reading specialist. Glenna received an Outstanding Teacher of America award in 1973. After 36 years of dedicated service to children she retired from Raleigh County Schools in 1977.
During retirement Glenna enjoyed many memorable trips across the country with her husband, Everett, as Winnebago Club members. Her talents and hobbies included art painting, quilting, sewing, knitting, vegetable and flower gardening. She was a member of the West Virginia Education Association, Shady Spring Women’s Club, Beckley Art Group and the Methodist Women’s Circle.
Glenna and Everett were founding members of the Perry Memorial United Methodist Church, of Shady Spring, enjoying faithful attendance and activities for many years. They joined Morris Memorial United Methodist Church, of Kanawha City, upon their move to Charleston, WV in 1995, where they also participated in services and activities regularly as long as possible.
Glenna is survived by her daughter, Barbara Lynch-Watson and her husband, Bernard “Ben” Watson, grandson, Charles Lynch, III and his wife, Tena Dye-Lynch; all of Charleston, WV, step-great grandchildren, Kristen (Kenneth) Bailey, Bethany (David) Atkins and Melody Bailey, of the Charleston area, step grandchildren Brian (Jayne) Watson and children Bennett and Morgan, of Northville, MI, Renee (Mark) Tillinghast and children Eli and Emmalyn, of Mooresville, NC, many loving nieces, nephews, friends and caregivers.
The family wishes to express sincere appreciation for the exceptional care and support provided by loving caregivers, hospice workers and staff of Charleston Gardens during Glenna’s time of need.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, May 1st at Morris Memorial United Methodist Church, Charleston, with Reverend Steve White officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
The burial service will commence at 2:45 PM.in the Mausoleum at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley, WV and will be conducted by Reverend Dr. Chuck Pullins.
