Obituary

About 93 ½ years ago, gloria olga mccarthy widdecombe was born in staten island, n.Y. She grew up there, went to curtis high school, where she was the prettiest one. She met her naval officer, chemist husband, lawrence and started a family, as often happens, lawrence iii, barbara and greg got to join that family. In 1954 off they went to oxford, connecticut and eight years later to the kanawha valley and union carbide.

The next big thing was buying plastic coatings, a paint and specialty coatings business. Gloria ran the books, collections and became an excellent business woman. That company also provided employment for larry iii, barbara and greg, greg still keeps it running.

Gloria was a good athlete. For many years she played top notch golf at kanawha country club. She and her husband also enjoyed tennis, playing at the players club and charleston tennis club.

She was mima (grandmother) to david widdecombe, lauren widdecombe frame, michael, brent and mark pressman and kristen strain. Great grandchildren abound. Harper widdecombe, katie and michael frame, stone, clover, lexy, kaitlyn, sophia, kaitlyn, and bailey pressman. Also, carly, logan and garrett strain from grandby ct.

So, you can do a lot in 93 ½ years. The last 11 years gloria was cared for in her home by her daughter, barbara. She died while sleeping in her own bed on may 10, 2018. She did quite well for all of us and had some fun doing it!

A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.M. Saturday, may 26, 2018 at barlow bonsall funeral home, charleston, wv.
