Obituary

John alden reynolds 92, of charleston, wv passed away friday, may 10, 2019 at hubbard hospice house, charleston, wv.

John was the second and last child of the late alma engle and moore m. Reynolds located on the hill-girt farm just north of clarksburg, wv.  he was born on november 18, 1926 and had one sister, anne who was two years older.  john graduated in 1944 from washington irving high school in clarksburg and was a graduate of the class of 1949 from wv university.  he was a member of the phi-sigma kappa social fraternity in morgantown.

He retired in 1994 as a principal engineer in the central research and engineering department of union carbide corporation located in south charleston. For most of his career, which spanned over 42 years, he was involved with the application, specification, procurement, installation, operation and maintenance of pumps and related machinery at union carbide located throughout the world.

He served as chairman of the american society of mechanical engineer’s b73 committee from 1969 until his retirement in april 1994.  he received asme’s dedicated serve award in 1994 for his work.  he published 15 technical articles, mostly dealing with pumps and pumping applications.

He started his military career in september 1944 when he joined the enlisted reserve corps of the united states army air force.  he spent approximately seven months with the army air corps in 1945 and was discharged on november 2, 1945. He was recalled to active duty in august 1950 during the korean war conflict. He was awarded a direct commission and remained in the air force reserve.  he retired with the rank of major on august 1, 1967 with over 20 years of service.  after his retirement he began working with the telephone pioneers in their talking book program for the blind and handicapped, sponsored by the national library service, under the library of congress,

he was preceded in death by his wife, betty mccracken reynolds who passed in 2017 and brother-in-law, bernard mccracken.

He is survived by sister-in-law, meta mccracken; nephews, barry (peggy) mccracken, jeff (iva) mccracken, scot mccracken; and niece sandra bourgeois.

Graveside  service will be held 2:00 pm monday, may 20, 2019 at donel c. Kinnard state veterans cemetery, dunbar, wv with rev. James robinson officiating.

    John And I Worked Together At Union Carbide For Many Years Dating Back To About 1962. He Was A Consummate Professional Who Excelled In His Special Field. I Always Enjoyed Working With Him Knowing I Could Count On What He Said. He Lived A Productive Life.
