Obituary

On sunday morning, january 20, velma june (betsy) brown of south charleston, let go of her life of 92 years in this world of five senses and was born into the kingdom of heaven.

She is survived by her children penelope allen (michael) of allendale, nj; monty brown of south charleston; and david brown (debbie) of nallen, wv; and grandchildren brice byham (keri) of neptune, nj; josh brown (cindy) of fairmont; liz byham of voorhees, nj.; bethany rinn (eric) of pittsburgh; madeline brown of nallen; and by twelve great grandchildren julia, brice, brody, brady, elizabeth, sydney, morgan, sara, katie, zoe, liv, and finn; and her favorite canine companion, rooney. She was preceded in death by parents john and ada sheets, husband joe brown, and daughter-in-law, jane brown, with whom she lived for the last 11 years.

Betsy retired from public school teaching in wood county as a third and second grade teacher, after twenty-five years of service. She was active in camping club and kiwanis, was an avid storyteller, and gave countless hours of service to her churches, wayside united methodist (vienna) and st. Marks united methodist (charleston.)

betsy was known by almost everyone who ever met her as a kind, generous, thoughtful, and genteel lady. Her father once remarked that the kind of care one receives in a hospital is brought through the front door with them as they entered. She was the type who always got loving attention wherever she went, because she was always so kind. She was loved by hundreds of students she taught, many of whom contacted her years later to tell her that she was their favorite teacher.

Friends and family will gather at 11:00 a.M., on saturday, january 26, at st. Marks united methodist church, in charleston, for visitation and fellowship, followed, at 1:00 p.M. By a worship and celebration of life, death and resurrection, led by the rev. Anne pruett-barnett and the rev. Mark pruett-barnett. You are encouraged, in lieu of flowers, to remember betsy with a gift to the prayerspitality trust fund, at united methodist foundation of wv, inc., p.O. Box 3811, charleston, wv 25338-3811.
