Obituary

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and father-in-law passed away surrounded by family at hubbard hospice house after a short illness on monday afternoon, august 1, 2016. He is survived by his wife, susan dawson tinney; his sons john hampton tinney, jr. (jack) and his wife staci steele tinney, james karney tinney (jim) and his wife melissa jugo tinney; granddaughters emma, nina and vida; grandsons john owen (owen) and roman; sister elizabeth tinney garten (libby) and her husband john garten and their children emily garten and david garten and his wife melanie and son rohan; and his cousin virginia rahal.

Born in charleston, wv on june 6, 1943, john attended sissonville high school, where in 1958 he met and dated susan until they were married on september 12, 1964 ““ he was the quarterback and she was the head majorette. He played football, basketball and baseball for sissonville hs.

After high school graduation he attended the university of virginia, where he played both football and baseball. John attended the west virginia college of law, graduating in 1969. Following his graduation, he clerked for united states district judge sydney christie in huntington before moving to the charleston law firm of spilman thomas battle & klostermeyer.
In 2001, he and his son jack started the tinney law firm, and in 2004 jim joined the firm.
In 2001, john served as president of the west virginia state bar. He was a member of the west virginia state bar board of governors from 1990-1993 and 1998-1999, and a fellow in the american bar foundation. John was a member of the fourth circuit judicial conference as well as a member of the west virginia university college of law visiting committee and development committee and multiple other professional organizations.
An avid sports fan, he held the cincinnati reds in particular esteem and arranged many family trips to the ballpark. His knowledge of baseball statistics and trivia was legendary.
John enjoyed traveling all over the world with his wife, susan and family and friends. He was most proud of his 2011 trip to corafin, ireland, where he hosted his entire family for over 3 weeks.
A wonderful storyteller, john was known to entertain many generations with his gregarious nature and highly detailed stories of trips, events and people.

John will be especially remembered for his quick large smile, his spirit of adventure and the tenaciousness that allowed him to achieve top rankings in many areas of his life both personally and professionally.

John and susan maintained their charleston home where they raised their children and hosted many holidays with family and loved ones. In 2013, they moved to fort myers, fl where he met new friends, enjoyed golf and attended many spring training baseball games.
